How are Oru Kayaks different from Hardshell Kayaks?
- Space Saver - Traditional rotomolded hardshell kayaks are heavy and take up space. You can store 8-10 Orus in the space you can store 1 traditional 12 ft kayak. You will still have rigid kayak performance on the water, but more space in your home or garage.
- No Roof Rack Required - Because they are so compact, they pack in the trunk of your car! No need to spend extra money on a roof rack. We've been told this can help you save on gas $$ too!
- Less Plastic- Our kayaks have 60% less plastic than traditional rotomolded kayaks on average.
Independence - No need to lift it above your head on a roof rack or recruit friends to help you port it to the water. Lightweight and easy to transport in a pack, you can walk, bike, or bus it to the water. - Care - Best care practices for an Oru are similar to a skin on frame or fiberglass. Like all high-end, light weight, packable gear, following best care practices will give you a long lifetime of use.
How are Oru Kayaks versus Inflatables?
Oru Kayaks have many advantages over inflatables.
- Easy clean up - Oru Kayaks need a quick wipe down with a towel after use, then you can fold them up until next time. Inflatables need to dry out for a day after use to prevent mildew.
- Better tracking - Oru Kayaks cut through the water and track like a dream due to the rigid hull. Inflatables often have poor tracking and can be difficult to paddle. If you want to go fast and stay on course, choose the smooth maneuverability of an Oru.
- More durable - Inflatables always have a risk of puncture, so rocks and boulders pose a risk. Oru Kayaks have an extremely tough hull made out of corrugated plastic, and while we also recommend avoiding sharp rocks and boulders when possible, our boats are designed to handle bumps and scratches along the way.
- Fast pack up - Oru Kayaks take just 5 (magical) minutes to pack up, while inflatables can be difficult to pack up and fold back into their bag.
But don't take our word for it! Check out Outdoor Gear Lab's "Best Inflatable Kayak's of 2019", where we come in first place!
How do I clean my kayak?
To clean your Oru Kayak, we recommend rinsing thoroughly with fresh water after each use - sediment and salt that dry to the surface of the boat can be abrasive over time. If possible, rinsing your kayak down with a hose is optimal. Soap and water is also fine for cleaning purposes, and won't damage the skin!
Bring along a towel or shammy to dry, especially when you will be storing it long-term in between paddles.
